COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Marathon County Public Library in Wausau will host a free event on Oct. 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. led by certified trainer Susan Shen—who completed menopause training—to discuss perimenopause and post-menopause health. Wausau Daily Herald
- ➤ Rib Mountain village leaders are changing mailing addresses to 'Village of Rib Mountain' to boost local pride & give the community a strong new identity. They will work to add Rib Mountain to the DMV system without changing zip codes and use events and merchandise to showcase the new branding. WSAW
- ➤ The Lincoln County Humane Society in Merrill cares for about 80 cats and kittens with roughly 50 waiting to be admitted – a surge that has seen more than two dozen kittens arrive this month. Staff urge local residents to adopt and fix their pets so the community can ease the crowding and overpopulation risks. WSAW
- ➤ CASA of Marathon County and the Marathon County Department of Social Services held a free night at the Historic Everest Mansion for people to learn about foster care and volunteer work. The event used stories and a Q&A session to show how CASA volunteers and foster parents help children in need—150 kids in foster care need a safe home. WSAW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students at Wausau East High School watched a helicopter land on the football field as part of an emergency medicine event held by the HOSA club and Aspirus Hospital. The event let students explore the cockpit and learn about CPR and trauma care. WAOW
- ➤ The state education agency maintained K-12 operations today during the federal shutdown, and most federal funds remain secure — though Impact Aid and child nutrition reimbursements may be delayed if the shutdown lasts for weeks. Wausau Daily Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Wausau purchased the former MBX property at 201 N 1st Ave as part of its ongoing effort to revitalize the riverfront—$250,000 from the Judd S. Alexander Foundation funded the purchase. City officials will meet with local stakeholders and private development partners to plan the site's future use and leverage federal brownfield tax credits. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Aspirus is rolling out a new E-visit program that makes it easier for patients to connect with health care providers — patients answer a series of questions about their symptoms and receive a care plan while the service addresses only common health concerns and urges emergency cases to seek immediate care. REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Lokre Development Company bought the 3rd Street Lifestyle Center on 3rd and Washington Streets in downtown Wausau — now renamed Washington Square. The company will add new awnings and create nine new apartments on the upper floors to improve the building. WSAW
