COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat Wausau unveiled its 75th home today during an open house—this milestone project was built with plans from Habitat and support from Mosinee High School and local volunteers who worked through the summer to complete the build.  WAOW
  • The Lakeland Pantry received a $3,000 grant from the Starbucks FoodShare program to purchase an extra freezer to increase storage capacity and serve more neighbors facing hunger—Director Lorna Springate said the grant expands the pantry's ability to safely distribute ready-to-eat meals.  WAOW
  • United Way of Marathon County is seeking volunteers to rake leaves for its annual Make a Difference Day event running from October 22 to October 25—over 100 yards are on the list. Families, friends and groups must register by October 15—volunteers should bring their own tools.  WAOW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin launched the Born to Dairy campaign last week at World Dairy Expo in Madison to show the real personalities of local dairy farmers—featuring figures like a farm MacGyver and Dairyland Darling who break old stereotypes. The campaign aims to connect consumers with real farmers and boost support for Wisconsin dairy products.  Wausau Daily Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Central Wisconsin Musicians are bringing two live music shows to Wausau this month—on October 16 the CWM Concert Band will perform Blast Off! A Musical Voyage at the UW Center for Civic Engagement Veninga Theater at 7:00 p.m. with a $10 ticket and on October 20 the CWM Jazz Ensemble will perform From Big Bands to Modern Gems at the Wausau Elks Lodge at 6:30 p.m. free of charge.  WAOW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Tourism awarded nearly $80,000 in JEM grants to Visit Wausau and the Greater Wausau Prosperity Partnership to boost regional outdoor recreation — Visit Wausau will use its $39,550 grant to promote the Two National Trails, One Basecamp campaign for the Great Pinery Heritage Waterway from March to September while the partnership will fund the Ride Wisconsin Gravel campaign from May to August.  WAOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marathon County Literacy hosted its second annual adult spelling bee to raise funds for McLit programs that help adults with reading, Spanish, math and financial skills. Six teams competed by spelling challenging words and the winners from Brokaw Credit Union earned the title Best Speller in Wausau — boosting local literacy support.  WSAW
  • On Tuesdays, Learn-Build-Fly will host Build Nights at the Wausau Airport where students of all ages will learn to weld and work with wood to build airplanes—helped by experienced pilots. The free classes will run from 7 p.m. until about 9:30 p.m.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported that most respiratory illnesses remain low as cold and flu season begins in north central Wisconsin, with influenza cases increasing while COVID numbers drop and RSV levels stay minimal.  WAOW

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, SPASH soccer beat Wausau West 1—0 with a goal from Zacariah Zillman while the school’s volleyball team swept Wisconsin Rapids 3—0 with set scores of 25—11, 25—23 and 25—14. The teams will play on Thursday and the volleyball team will join a Valley tournament Saturday at SPASH.  WSAW
