COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, The Women’s Community showed strength by displaying about 100 handmade t-shirts on a clothesline—each shirt sharing a survivor’s message—at U.W. Stevens Point in Wausau yesterday. The Clothesline Project will be shown again at North Central Technical College on Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to honor survivors. WSAW
- ➤ Menards is hosting a hunger relief food drive by collecting non-perishable items (cereal, soup) for a local pantry until Oct. 31. Shoppers are encouraged to drop off donations near the exit doors. Wausau Daily Herald
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Birnamwood native Ryan Walkowski is set to release his book In Combat in Korea: Eighteen Veterans Remember the War this winter after spending over four years gathering veterans' stories from across the country—he hopes the work highlights the bravery and hardships of those who served. Walkowski aims to share firsthand accounts that bring a true understanding of the Korean War experience. WSAW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Wausau School District announced yesterday that Grant Elementary School is back on the market after an earlier purchase offer fell through. The district is working with broker Tim Wimmer—who is local—and the School Board will make the final decision on the sale. WAOW
- ➤ Mid-State Technical College was named runner-up for Transfr’s Trailblazer Power of Partnership Award for its work on the AMETA Center—a hub for hands-on workforce training—and accepted the award this week at Transfr’s XR Futures conference in New York. WAOW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Wisconsin DOT and Beecher Hoppe held an information meeting for a $3.4 million project to rebuild the section of Ross Avenue between Metro Drive and Alderson Street in Weston by replacing four way stops with roundabouts and adding bike lanes, sidewalks, and crossings. Construction will start early 2027 and finish later in the fall—plans include replacing utilities and easing shifts for the Schofield Business Park. WSAW
- ➤ Elizabeth Gebert has announced her candidacy for Wood County Circuit Court Judge—Branch 3. With over 16 years of experience as a prosecutor—and former District Attorney, she will join Judge Emily Nolan-Plutchak in the election scheduled for April 7, 2026. WAOW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ State Senator Kelda Roys and Representative Jodi Emerson introduced the Building Families Act— a bill that would require insurance companies to cover some costs for fertility treatment and preservation to help young cancer patients before they start treatment. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said he has not seen the bill but supports IVF. WAOW
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ At Hoehn’s Huddle in Schofield, Brewers fans cheered as the playoff atmosphere energized the crowd with free Jell–O shots for every home run—reminiscent of a lively Packers game. Staff said they will host fans again when the Brewers and Cubs meet in Chicago on Thursday. WSAW
