BUSINESS NEWS

  • Alex Swiderski, a former boxer who trained with Cassius Clay, built Swiderski Equipment into a multi-million dollar business and now plans a succession to his grandson Stanford as the company marks 100 years—he also will soon celebrate 62 years of marriage with Dianne. This local leader proves that hard work and determination continue to drive success in the agriculture industry.  WSAW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Drivers in Wausau are noticing lower gas prices as gasoline inventories increased and summer-grade fuel switched to winter blend—regular unleaded now averages near $2.60 while the state’s overall average dropped to $2.67 a gallon.  WSAW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Edgar High School are building an outdoor classroom—led by teacher Greg Streit—that will serve FFA classes and agriculture programs while teaching teamwork and construction skills. Roofing work is scheduled for next week as the project continues its hands-on learning approach.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Wisconsin legislators introduced two new bills to protect the state's natural resources—one requires mining companies to prove their projects will not harm water while the other recognizes Devil's Lake's right to exist, and Menomonee Nation citizen Guy Reiter spoke to honor the land.  WAOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • As the weather gets colder, doctors advise getting a flu shot to reduce symptoms and spread of the illness—especially for young children, older adults, and those with chronic conditions. The vaccine, available as an injection or nasal spray, will help lower the risk of severe flu and support community health—making it a key step in flu prevention.  WSAW
  • Aspirus hospitals were recognized as CheckPoint Top Performers by the Wisconsin Hospital Association, ranking them in the top 10% statewide for infection prevention, patient safety, maternal and newborn care—patient experience. The voluntary program measured over 45 quality indicators to ensure safe, compassionate care for patients across the region.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Experts say one in eight men may be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and early detection provides a 99 percent five-year survival rate. Doctors advise men 50 and older to talk to their primary care provider if they notice symptoms like weak urine flow & frequent nighttime trips to the bathroom.  WSAW
  • Rennes Health & Rehab Center in Weston will host a free fall prevention class from 2-3 p.m. on Oct. 16 at 4810 Barbican Ave to teach older adults home safety and simple balance exercises that can reduce fall risks. The session is led by its physical and occupational therapy teams and encourages community members to make small changes in daily habits to maintain independence.  Wausau Daily Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Wausau Curling Club is offering learn to curl sessions to teach residents the basics of the winter sport in anticipation of the winter Olympics. Sessions will run on Oct. 15 and Oct. 20 from 6-8 p.m.—each limited to 32 participants at $10 per person.  WAOW
