COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Ten young women and teens from central Wisconsin will compete on Nov. 1 at the UW Center for Civic Engagement for the titles of Miss Wausau Area 2026 and Miss Wausau Area's Teen 2026—contestants will be judged on interviews, talent, and health and fitness with winners earning scholarships and a chance to compete in state pageants. - ➤ The Central Fire & EMS District held its annual Silent Parade to honor fallen firefighters and EMS workers who died in the line of duty. The event started in Colby, passed through Abbotsford, and ended in Dorchester — uniting dozens of stations in a powerful tribute to their service. WAOW
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Hy-Vee announced it will acquire the County Market store at 220 S. 18th Avenue, which will close at 6 p.m. on Nov. 11 and reopen as Wausau Hy-Vee on Nov. 18—along with the adjacent Circle K that will be renamed Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh. All 130 County Market employees will be offered positions with enhanced benefits. Wausau Times
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Marathon County Public Library announced a month-long writing challenge — National Novel Writing Month — at the Wausau library this November; participants must write 3,000 words, pick up a log sheet at the first Write Night on November 4 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., and submit their stories from November 30 to December 6 before the prize drawing on December 9. - ➤ On October 13, the Wausau School Board selected Charles Burger to fill the seat vacated by Jane Rusch’s resignation in August, and he will serve until the April election as he plans to run for reelection. Burger stated his top priorities include fixing deferred maintenance and district funding constraints — he also aims to enhance support for teachers to boost student achievement. Wausau Daily Herald

- ➤ The Marathon County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of its K9 Radar, who served as a loyal partner since 2013 and is remembered by his handlers for unwavering dedication and courage. WAOW
- ➤ A central Wisconsin family met with lawmakers in Madison Wednesday (pushing a bill that would require first responders to be trained and carry an EpiPen). The Muellers, who lost their son Andrew to a peanut allergy last November, donated auto-injectors to Wood County officers (while lawmakers debate funding and training costs). WSAW
- ➤ The Wausau Police Department is seeking Shelter Advocates to work two to four shifts at the Wausau-Marathon County Shelter with shifts from midnight to 8 a.m. on week days and weekends—applications are now being accepted. WAOW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Community Blood Center is urging eligible donors to schedule a lifesaving donation as soon as possible because its supply of Type O and A blood is critically low—enough for only 2-3 days of hospital use—and is needed by over 40 area hospitals. Donated blood can save up to 3 lives per donation, and donors may earn points through the Lifesaver Rewards program for items like gift cards and movie ticket vouchers. Wausau Times
- ➤ Aspirus Health Plan is urging community members to check their Medicare plans during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7) so they can secure the best fit for their health needs for 2026. Medicare users can change plans by moving between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare, with help from a trusted agent. WAOW
- ➤ Breast Cancer Awareness Month tells high-risk women to talk with a specialist and get a screening plan tailored to their needs — experts say early testing can catch cancer when it is most treatable. Wausau Times
