- ➤ Dogs and their owners gathered at Sandy’s Bark Park for the third annual Halloween parade and costume contest today, with Shane and his dog Rocko—dressed as a monkey and banana—winning the best costume prize. A Facebook contest will select the most engaged photo with a winner announced Monday at noon. WSAW
- ➤ Today, Wausau was named the 3rd hidden gem to live in by a national survey from GoBankingRates that looked at livability and housing affordability—Wausau's average home value of just over $238,000 and variety of outdoor activities helped earn the spot. Local leaders, including Mayor Doug Diny and development director Randy Fifrick, praised the result and said it confirms the city's appeal to newcomers. WAOW
- ➤ The Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin launched the Formula and Food Insecurities Fund to support local nonprofits distributing food and formula (Marathon, Lincoln, Langlade and Taylor counties) because a government shutdown halted federal programs like SNAP and WIC. - ➤ Marathon County Crime Stoppers is recruiting new volunteer board members to boost anonymous crime tip reporting and community outreach. The group meets five times a year and handles emails, calls + fundraisers, and President Marlana Moss invites interested citizens to apply via the Crime Stoppers website. WSAW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Colby School District is launching a strategic planning process to set the future for its schools—parents, teachers, staff, students and community members can share their views through interviews, focus groups and an online survey in November and December. The board will review the findings and release a Strategic Plan report in spring to direct future decisions. WSAW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Wausau is planning to redevelop the vacant office building at 11 Scott Street into a mixed-use space with commercial areas on the lower floors and 52 new apartments above - the project also aims to resolve parking issues while developer Raleigh Lokre brings a development agreement to the city council in the next two to three months. This plan comes as businesses struggle to return following the pandemic and current co-working uses are not sustainable. WSAW
