COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Good Shepherd Shelter opens today for the winter season to provide a safe, warm place for homeless adults. The shelter is located at (360 Grand Avenue, Suite 800) and operates (7 p.m.–8 a.m.) daily.  WSAW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Franciscan sisters returned the Maywood property to the Lac du Flambeau tribe as a form of reparations—an act that marks a historic step in healing the painful legacy of boarding schools. Tribal leaders said the land will be used for spiritual events and education and hope other institutions will follow this path of reconciliation.  WAOW
  • Healthy Opportunities for Latin Americans is hosting a Dia de los Muertos event today at 5:30 p.m. at Restlawn Memorial Park on N Troy Street—attendees are invited to honor Mexican traditions by bringing photos and ofrendas—admission is $5 unless a sugar skull costume is worn.  WSAW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Tony Evers signed a bill on Friday that requires all public schools to ban cellphone use during class by July 1—phones may be used only in emergencies, for health needs, or with teacher approval, and the measure passed with bipartisan support amid some debate over school safety priorities.  WSAW

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Realtors Association released its September report showing home prices rose by 8.7% and sales increased by 6.9% while only four months of housing inventory remained; local realtor Mittelsteadt said Wausau was ranked 6th among the nation’s hottest markets — a sign of strong local demand despite minor loan delays from a government shutdown and a rate cut announced on October 29.  WAOW
