Good morning, Wausau. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 11th of December.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • As temperatures are expected to drop below zero this weekend, the sheriff advises residents to prepare emergency kits and unhook outside hoses to avoid frozen pipes. Bridge Street Mission is taking over the temporary W-M-C shelter to support those in need and plans to finish an emergency facility by April.  WAOW
  • A winter storm left hydrants covered in snow in Wausau and Rib Mountain today, so fire departments urge residents to clear them for quick emergency response. SAFER Fire District notes NFPA rules require 3 ft clearance for smaller hydrants (5 ft for larger ones) to keep access clear.  WSAW
  • Today, the Community Foundation honored Dave and Marie Eisenreich with the Spirit of Philanthropy Award and Peter Gaffaney with the inaugural Community Partner Award at its annual donor celebration in north central Wisconsin.  Wausau Daily Herald
  • Local community members held a holiday event where businesses wrapped 51 gifts and filled 150 stockings for CASA and foster children using proceeds from a Miron Construction raffle in August — organizers invite volunteers to keep spreading joy this season.  WAOW
  • On Oct. 22, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular donated $1,500 worth of children's toys & sensory mats to Gigi's Playhouse, a Down syndrome achievement center in Weston. The donation helped support its daily sensory-oriented learning efforts.  WAOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin DOT announced a plan to reconstruct a 1.3-mile section of Grand Avenue (mostly in Schofield) to replace worn pavement, outdated signals, and narrow bike accommodations. The project will cost $8-$9 million with design work continuing through 2026 and construction starting as early as 2029.  WSAW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts at Aspirus advise parents to remove thick winter jackets from car seats because bulky coats can loosen harness straps (a pinch test helps decide if a jacket is too heavy). They recommend thinner alternatives like side zipper coats to keep children safe.  WSAW

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Knowlton House Distillery in Mosinee is sharing its festive ‘White Christmas’ cocktail recipe that mixes TenHead Classic Vodka with local ingredients, including Wisconsin cream + cinnamon bitters. The distillery will also host cocktail-making classes this weekend and next to boost home bartending skills.  WSAW
