COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Mountain Bay Trail will partially open for snowmobiles today at 8 a.m. along CTH J east into Shawano County (all cross-trails remain closed) as officials warn riders to exercise caution on early season conditions. WSAW
- ➤ Sylvan Hill’s tubing season opening is delayed due to cold weather — wind chill below safe levels has forced a postponement. The park will open on Saturday, Dec. 20 with two hills and a tow rope system. WSAW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Wausau School District welcomes the community to an Open House at John Muir Middle School on Monday, Dec. 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will showcase upgrades like new technology spaces, a weight room, a gym, music areas, and updated classrooms (April 2022 referendum). WAOW
- ➤ State data showed that about 25% of Wisconsin school districts had a licensed pool (over 100 pools in total), and the provided list names each district offering aquatics as part of state teaching standards. Wausau Daily Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ WisDOT installed a new wrong-way driving alert system at the Highway 29 and Business 51 interchange in Rothschild to warn drivers with oversized LED signs. The system uses cameras and radar (alerting law enforcement nearly instantly) to boost road safety. WSAW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Two north central transplant patients bonded after receiving heart transplants three days apart at UW Health, sharing stories of faith and loss. Denis Menjivar no longer needs a defibrillator while Scott Kneser returns to refereeing after a decade away — both credit the donor gift with renewing their hope. WSAW
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ On Friday, the 30th Win Brockmeyer Award ceremony honored high school football players from Wausau West, Wausau East, Newman Catholic, and D.C. Everest by awarding each nominee a $500 scholarship while the top recipient earned $1,500. WSAW
- ➤ Marathon hosted Prentice for a Friday night tipoff where the Red Raiders built an early lead and won 70-38. Maycie Myszka and Mayven Schneider sparked the game (key players behind the victory). WSAW
- ➤ On Friday at Gregory Gym, Wisconsin volleyball beat Stanford 3 sets to 1, securing its first win over the Cardinal and advancing to the NCAA Regional Final where it will face No. 1 Texas on Sunday, Dec. 14. WAOW
